Surprise!
You
overcome me,
stun me,
in every sense
become me,
and
I just
wanted
to show the world
How much
I Love
You!

Who
would have guessed
that
I’d find
(or was it I who was found?)
hidden
among the deadened leaves
in the garden
green
playing a game of
hide and
seek,
You?
(My friend, Hafiz,
surely he knew.)
Tag,
I’m it!

This morning, as I was in the garden clearing away dead leaves from my plants, I was taken by surprise when one of the “leaves” grabbed and held onto my finger. This South American Dead-leaf Mantis is a stunning example of mimicry, with a shimmering golden hue in sunlight.
“I’m It” is a reference, in subject, style, and form, though without the mastery, to “You’re It” by Hafiz (from the “The Gift, Poems by Hafiz the Great Sufi Master,” with translations by Daniel Ladinsky). I am inspired beyond recognition of myself and so grateful to God for introducing me to his work.
