My Cats

My Cats

My Cats
love to lay in an opened newspaper
and purr
kneeding their paws and licking
the fur
behind their heads.
They appear from the shadows with stealth
and speed
and choose the section I was planning
to read
but never Sports.
They like to show what sophisticates
they are
when they rest upon magazines like
Harper’s Bazaar
or The Economist.
A cracked book is oft a tempting invite
to stay
while important papers are quite grand
for play,
or chewing,
or hiding under sofas and beds
and the like.
And though they exhibit this curiosity
and interest
above all, it’s just a well-practiced and feigned
indifference
to the significance
of it all.
